A careful study of a new Lexus

Corrections that are made soon after release in auto-making business are a sign of problems with technique or quality with produced model. This is the thing that happened with Lexus IS F. It was presented in 2007 in Detroit, it was a fresh Japanese look on sedan line, and it was aimed at competing with BMW, Audi and Cadillac analogs, although its power was not enough to be a real challenger to win in this competition.

Lexus understood their failure and reissued IS F in 2011 with better materials, handling, interior and exterior. But does it allow Lexus to return to competition again? This model has greatly changed in comparison with older models of this series: it has improved design, brakes, engine and exhaust.

In 2009 we really appreciated this car for its appearance and a brave attempt to compete with the great brands. But in fact it was not good at all. This car was good enough for cross-country, but on the streets it was awfully bad. This opinion was shared by most auto-critics.

So in 2011 these problems seem to vanish. The suspension was improved greatly, so that it is now pleasant to sit in IS F while driving along straight streets. The handling was enhanced by improving wheel and turning feelings of the car. The wheels were enlarged to 20-inch. Interior was changed by adding LCD screens and improving dashboard with its sensors.
Very comfortable and stylish 

The 470 hp engine remains unchanged. The transmission is slightly improved by electronic control settings. New IS F top speed is about 190 mph, and it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4,5 seconds – that’s a good result for such a class of car.

Interior is made of black and orange leather – such a combination might scare shy people, but it is not the worst thing that could be there. IS F new price is $59,000 with base equipment. For additional options you should pay about $6,000.

In comparison with the older model it was tested in the same way as the 2007 had been. Among these competes there was family use, street-road longtime riding and canyon climbing. The car was driven with Sport mode off to see what the base pack itself is. And it showed good results: it was pleasant and easy to drive, comfortable to sit and strong enough to deal with the tasks. Then the car was driven along the highway with acceleration to 120 km/h, and its handling became boring but easy. It was hard but not too uncomfortable – just enough balanced.

The next step was switching the Sport mode on. By the way, the Sport-mode button is now placed in a right place on the dashboard, unlike the first model of 2007. Switching the Sport mode on makes Lexus IS F a real beast, roaring with its V8 engine. Now handling seems more dangerous but really exciting. When you start from the place in Sport mode and acceleration full-on, the wheels are burning and screaming, and even if this is not ecological, it finally gives you emotions you missed while driving IS F in normal mode.

New changes improves handling, makes the dashboard more useful and comfortable, but sharp turns are still Lexus IS F’s problem, as wheels can’t deal with them properly. But breaking is improved greatly, so that it balances lack of maneuvering.

It`s a big step for sedan Lexus

To make the conclusion, we should say: undoubtedly, 2011 Lexus IS F is the best car that Lexus has ever built. Still it is not strong enough to compete with stronger companies of America and Europe. But it is a car that provides a perfect balance between luxury and performance for such a small price. We hope it will be further improved and will be able to win the competition in attracting clients’ attention towards it.
